What we all want to see – a village pub doing well……
Little Weighton is one of those little villages that feels like it’s way out in the country despite it actually being just a couple of miles outside of Hull. It’s surrounded by the Wolds and you have to make an effort to go through there as it’s not really on the way to anywhere. This may have been one of the reasons that the village’s only pub – The Black Horse – has struggled in the past few years.
Last time I went in was around a decade ago and it was very tired and dusty and felt like the last few villagers still using it were only going in to have a kip of an afternoon.
It had a mini-revamp under new owners a couple of years ago but things didn’t really pick up, so when it was leased to current landlady Micaela Clegg hopes probably weren’t too high of a significant improvement. Fortunately, Micaela has form when it comes to running successful catering ventures – she started the hugely popular Relish sandwich shop in Hull’s Old Town – and under her stewardship the Black Horse has seen a remarkable turnaround.
The entire place was renovated, the dust blown away and a cosy, modern country sheen applied to the main bar and lounge. The pub is a free house so there is now a great choice of local ales and ciders and the menu features an appealing mix of pub staples (ham, eggs and chips, steak and ale pie) and the slightly more adventurous. The likes of duck confit and bacon salad, frittata, venison pie or liver and bacon may not quite raise the grub to gastropub levels, but it’s much more exotic than you will find in many village pubs.
There is a recently rebuilt function room to the rear which can be pressed into use as on busier dining days (Sundays are always very busy) or as a dedicated dining room, and the pub has also hosted events such as a beer festival, which proved hugely popular.
All-in-all the future is looking very bright for the Black Horse and it’s high time a few more of us do the right thing and make the effort to take a detour through Little Weighton to check it out.
